Charles Fort
The historic Needham’s peninsula on which Hilton Barbados Resort sits was once part of the critical Fort and a strategic point of defense for Barbados. The Fort was constructed in 1650 by the Barbados Militia and manned by its forces to defend the Capital City, Bridgetown, and its main harbour from invading forces who sought to gain ownership of the island.
George Washington’s visit to Barbados started on September 19, 1751 and he landed in Barbados on November 2, 1751 on board the ship “Success”. During Mr. Washington’s seven-week visit he dined at the historic Charles Fort.
The Charles Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
