Charles Fort
The historic Needham’s peninsula on which Hilton Barbados Resort sits was once part of the critical fort and a strategic point of defense for Barbados. Charles Fort was constructed in 1650 by the Barbados Militia and manned by its forces to defend the capital city, Bridgetown, and its main harbor from invading forces who sought to gain ownership of the island.
The Charles Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
FUN FACT: Back in 1751, George Washington’s sailed to Barbados on board the ship “Success”, landing on Carlisle Bay on November 2. During Mr. Washington’s seven-week visit to the island, he dined repeatedly at the historic Charles Fort.
