The creators of 39 Rue de Jean chose 39 John Street, a two story brick warehouse built in 1880, to house the Brasserie. The building was built for the Charleston Manufacturing Company for storing finished products. Around 1943, the structure was redesigned by Augustus E. Constantine in the popular Art Moderne style, for adaptive office space. It was part of the Washington Reality Company’s redevelopment of the bagging company complex in the 1940’s.

Our local guests refer to us as “Rue” and they know just how passionate we are about both our food and our service. We have been industry leaders since 2001, when the 39 Rue de Jean doors initially opened. Voted Best French Restaurant year after year by the Charleston City Paper, we are grateful to be a part of the Charleston Restaurant Community as well as the historic downtown community that we’re grateful to take part in.

Today at Victor Social Club, we pay homage to the social club legend, serving classic cocktails made with you in mind, icy cold beers, as well as an extensive wine list boasting with flavors from around the world. Like most club life established in the eighteenth-century, Victor Social Club is based strongly on Charleston foundations of leisure and community – values we uphold with pride.

During the prohibition era, Vincent Chicco, who migrated to Charleston from Italy, became known as “the king of bling tigers.” During this era, many Charlestonians considered themselves immune from the laws governing the rest of the state. Chicco ran a number of saloons in Charleston and led the fight locally against prohibition, where he was seen as a local hero.

The secret behind the “blind tigers” is one would pay to “see the blind tiger” (which of course didn’t exist) and in exchange would receive a “free” drink. Vincent Chicco’s illegal drinking establishments also caused him to become the first arrest after Governor Ben Tillmans’s dispensary bill passed. Many Charlestonians opposed the state dispensary law, which encouraged Gov. Tillman to make Charleston “the dryest place on earth”.

Vincent Chicco’s arrest became infamous, and other barkeeps were reportedly jealous of his instant fame. Despite his brush with the law, he continued to sell alcohol to his customers and lead to at

As natives to Charleston, Red & Virginia were raised with southern customs and traditions in their blood. Mrs. Bennett will tell you, as any true Southerner will agree, food and family are the threads that bind the traditions of the South.

Our inspiration for this restaurant came from Warren J. and Virginia Bennett, tried and true Southerners with a family tradition of creating an atmosphere of hospitable, southern comfort, good company and comforting dishes.

Virginia brought up a family of her own, raising four boys and two girls. For years, the Bennett family went to church on Sunday and then came home to Sunday Family Dinner. Traditionally, Southern families joined together in the afternoon for good company, conversation, and the familiar dishes prepared from family recipes, collected and passed down through the years.
