Hotel History
Steeped in history, discover the fascinating story behind Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem and its distinctive character.
- The Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem is built on the foundations of the historic luxury Palace Hotel, the initiative of the Supreme Muslim Council, led by the Mufti of Jerusalem, Hajj Amin al-Husseini.
- The original hotel building had four floors, the ground floor facing the street has wide arches. The building was decorated with Mamluk-style stone carvings, similar to the stone carvings of Jerusalem’s Old City walls.
- The inauguration of the building took place on December 21, 1929, with a distinguished ceremony attended by many senior officials. Considered the first luxury hotel in the Middle East, the hotel had the most unique services and facilities of the period: elevators, private bathrooms and modern plumbing, bedside telephones, and heating. The Mufti hosted many kings and heads of state with great splendor.
- After the Palace hotel closed in 1935, due to competition with the King David Hotel, the building was leased by the British government to serve as an office building. The Peel Commission, set up to investigate the events of 1936, took its seat in the hotel's Great Hall.
- As various testimonies were given behind closed doors, the heads of the Jewish community, asked for the help of the hotel's engineer- Katinka, to eavesdrop on them.
- He assisted in installing microphones inside the light bulb houses above the conference table. A hidden receiving device recorded the content of the discussions on coils, and they were transmitted daily to representatives of the national institutions.
- The radio studios of the "Voice of Jerusalem" station began broadcasting on March 30, 1936, from this building.
- At the end of the War of Independence, as of 1949 the building was housing number of Israeli government offices. Eventually, the building was transferred to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, which occupied it for 50 years, during which the building's condition deteriorated drastically.
- In 1981, a plan to change the zoning of the complex was approved, returning the Palace Hotel building to its original hotel purpose, demolishing the later additions to it, and re-expanding it according to a conservation plan.
- In 2006, the Reichman family purchased the building and the work began, lasting nearly eight years. As a heritage site, the façade of the building was never demolished and instead, a team of many architects worked for three years to restore the architecture of 1929.
- For years as they worked, only the façade and a large hole in the ground remained. The interior of the rotunda is an exact replica of 1929, the Arabesque style metal balustrades, the columns, and castings in the ceiling, as well as the lighting fixtures, are an exact reconstruction of the historic structure.
- After years of great anticipation, the Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem opens its doors as the only luxury international hotel brand in the city.
