Spring in San Luis Obispo
Visit SLO in spring for options that range from wine tasting to nature, food festivals, and film. Start with Edna Valley tastings that spotlight cool climate wines including Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, then see spring blooms of lupine and California poppies along Shell Creek Road and Bitterwater Road. Foodies will enjoy springtime tamale and taco festivals and cinephiles can celebrate the moving image at the annual SLO Film Festival in April. Finish your day with a sunset on the coast, from the sheltered cove at Avila to the broad sands of Pismo. Embassy Suites by Hilton San Luis Obispo sits near U.S. 101 for quick hops between downtown, coast and vineyards, and simplifies your stay with all-suite layouts and free made-to-order breakfast.
Summer on the SLO coast
Hiking and music are among the many highlights of summer. For a little shade before you hit the sand, follow the paved creekside Bob Jones Trail for a hike (or bike ride) from Highway 101 to Avila Beach. Another low-key hike follows the cliffside Bluff Trail in Montaña de Oro State Park where panoramic views of the coastline await you. After a day on the trail, return downtown for Concerts in the Plaza, a free weekly series featuring rock, reggae, R&B, and funk acts for your listening and dancing pleasure. Set your base at Hilton Garden Inn San Luis Obispo/Pismo Beach for hillside views and easy on-site dining at Garden Grille & Lounge in the mornings and evenings.
Fall harvest in Edna Valley
Slow down in fall with wine events and harvest-focused fun. Because September is California Wine Month, you’ll find tastings, seminars, vineyard tours, winemaker dinners and more throughout the city and Edna Valley. Another option is picking apples at Gophen Glen Apple Farm, or pumpkins at Brookshire Farms Pumpkin Patch, where you can also navigate through a night maze and other family-friendly activities. If you’re getting into a spooky mood closer to Halloween, check out the Cambria Scarecrow Festival, or costume up for the Witches Paddle on Morro Bay. Hilton Vacation Club San Luis Bay Avila Beach offers easy access to it all. Suites with fully equipped kitchens, plus a community BBQ area, give you lots of options for meals, and access to Avila Beach for after-dinner strolls around sunset.
Winter calm in Morro Bay
Winter is a quieter time on the Central Coast, but there’s still plenty to do. See thousands of Monarch butterflies that winter at The Monarch Butterfly Grove in Pismo Beach — you can explore the grove via games and trivia. If you’re looking for something a bit more active, sign up for a surf lesson, or paddleboard in the calm waters of Avila Beach or the Morro Bay Estuary — protected coves and the Mediterranean climate contribute to warmer winter temperatures. Continue your coastal adventures with whale-watching at spots including San Simeon and San Luis Bay. Base yourself at Hampton Inn Morro Bay, minutes from the beach, for relaxed mornings and free hot breakfast before you head out — access to Highway 1 couldn’t be easier.
