When summer hands the seasonal baton over to the fall, vacations take on a different hue. Some destinations erupt in the annual explosion of autumnal shades of fiery reds, mellow yellows, and deep chestnuts, while a vacation that’s further afield may boast a more tropical palette. No matter the destination, it’s a wonderful time for families to make memories, and Halloween just adds to the vacation fun.
Bridgetown, Barbados
A fall getaway in Barbados trades the typical reds and yellows associated with fall foliage with lush greenery and sparkling blue waters. At Needham’s Point, you can walk to three different beaches. Catch the surf at Drill Hall, snorkel the reefs at the main beach, or visit Pebbles Beach for calm shallows and the famous morning horse swims. Find pumpkin patches, apple donuts, and more seasonal fun at Southern Hills Farm in nearby Clermont.
Chicago
Some of the most enthralling leaf-peeping for families staying in the Windy City can be found in Chicago’s 385-acre (155.8-hectare) Botanic Garden, where trees glow with color and fall flowers, including sunflowers and chrysanthemums. Lincoln Park Zoo rolls out the autumnal carpet, too, with its annual Fall Fest. Kids can dart around corn mazes, watch pro pumpkin-carving sessions, and meet the zoo’s famous residents. Apple Fest, in the neighborhoods of Lincoln Square and Ravenswood, has been entertaining locals and tourists for more than 30 years with seasonal fun, featuring musicians, jugglers, and sing-alongs for the kids, and just-harvested apple treats for the whole family (think pies, cider, and donuts). Austin, Texas

Back in the city, explore interactive museums like the Texas Science & Natural History Museum, let little ones roam free at the city’s many parks, or catch the unforgettable sight of thousands of bats taking flight at the Congress Avenue Bridge, which occurs through early fall.
