A road trip gives you the freedom to vacation at your own pace — with your favorite playlist providing the soundtrack and plenty of room for your luggage. Ready to put your foot on the gas and get going? Here’s how to plan a summer road trip itinerary that lets you cruise through some of the most scenic drives in the United States, sightseeing as you go.
Washington, D.C.
The U.S. capital has so much to see and do, from the White House to world-class museums, vibrant shopping, and a thriving food scene — and it’s surprisingly easy to make a stop here as part of a larger road trip. Choosing a home base that’s close to a major highway, as well as the city’s main attractions, is key to making the most of your time. Hampton Inn Washington Downtown Convention Center perfectly fits the bill with a location that’s just minutes from the National Mall, several Smithsonian museums, Chinatown, and other top sites. The hotel is a convenient and comfortable pit stop, offering free hot breakfast and on-site valet parking. Ideal for road-tripping families, there’s also an on-site restaurant, fitness center, and options for connecting rooms, so everyone has space to spread out, while still staying together.
The Florida Keys
Discovering the many islands of the sun-soaked Florida Keys is effortless when you get behind the wheel, enjoying spectacular sunsets and mesmerizing views along the Overseas Highway. Located in the Middle Keys, the family-friendly island of Marathon is ideally placed for easy exploring. Check in at Hampton Inn Marathon, and not only will you experience the Floridian charm of the restaurants and shops while surrounded by coastline along this 10-mile (16-kilometer) island, you’re also in a top spot for trips to the beach towns of the Upper and Lower Keys, including far-flung Key West. Spacious rooms and free hot breakfast await, with popular highlights nearby, including the Turtle Hospital, Sombrero Reef Marine Sanctuary, and Seven Mile Bridge. Pets are welcome, and when you need a breather from exploring the Florida Keys, there’s an oceanfront pool with a tiki bar to enjoy.
Las Vegas
Few American road trips promise quite the contrast that Nevada does. Your front windshield can be filled with views of red rock formations and the bright neon lights of Las Vegas on the same day. To see the best of Sin City without expensive valet fees and bumper-to-bumper congestion, head south of the Las Vegas Strip. Hampton Inn Las Vegas Strip South is easy to access and has free parking, as well as free hot breakfast and an outdoor pool and hot tub. Vegas’ most famous attractions, such as the High Roller observation wheel, The Sphere, and the ‘Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas’ sign, are a short drive from the hotel, and when you’re ready to hit the road, the hotel’s location also offers quick access to major highways, including I-15 and I-215, connecting you to nearby national parks and state parks.
