Hotel History
Hotel HistoryHilton Boston Park Plaza has a beloved history as Back Bay’s most fashionable hotel.
A classic since 1927
Construction on the hotel began in 1925. It opened to the public on March 10, 1927 as “The Statler Hotel,” named after its visionary owner. For five decades, it was the largest independent hotel in New England and eighth largest hotel in the world.
Construction took 5 million bricks, 2 acres of glass, 10 acres of carpet, 7,000 doors, 200 miles of molding, and 16 million pounds of steel.
Hosted dignitaries like Winston Churchill and President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Since opening, all but two US Presidents have stayed at the hotel.
There were radios in every room, and the penthouse featured a broadcast studio for the Boston radio station, WBZ.
Graced by Hollywood royalty including Katherine Hepburn and Judy Garland.
The 14th floor was a renowned hospital complete with an operating room and a Nose and Throat Department.
The roof had a print shop, a carpenter shop, and an upholstery shop. The basement housed the largest barber shop in New England.
