What makes the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque one of Abu Dhabi’s most famous landmarks?

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is a large white marble structure completed in 2007, and its scale makes it a defining landmark of Abu Dhabi's architecture. The complex covers around 12 hectares and is topped by 82 domes, with reflecting pools along its outer courtyards that mirror the building.

Its interior holds a single hand-knotted carpet measuring more than 5,000 square metres, made by hundreds of weavers, alongside large chandeliers and floral inlay worked into the marble using semi-precious stones. The design combines craftsmanship and materials sourced from several countries, and the symmetry of the courtyards and minarets is a frequent subject for photographers.

Visitors may tour the complex free of charge, with guided architectural walks available and a dress code in place. The four minarets each rise around 107 metres. It is open to the public for most of the day, with adjusted hours on Fridays. Opening hours, dress-code requirements and guided-tour arrangements can change, so check the mosque's official visitor information before going.

What can you see on Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island?

Saadiyat Island is being developed as Abu Dhabi's cultural district. The Louvre Abu Dhabi, opened in 2017, is the main draw, its latticed dome casting a patterned 'rain of light' over galleries that present art spanning many periods and regions; the dome alone weighs around 7,500 tonnes. Nearby, the Zayed National Museum covers the country's history and natural environment.

Further venues are under construction on the island as the district takes shape. Saadiyat also has some of the emirate's quieter beaches, with soft sand, calm water and a stretch of protected coast where hawksbill turtles nest between spring and summer. A boardwalk crosses the dunes to the shore, and the beaches are managed to limit disturbance to the nesting sites.

A morning at the museums pairs naturally with an afternoon by the sea, and the island lies around twenty minutes by road from the city centre. Museum openings, beach access and protected-area rules can change as the district develops, so check official museum and destination information before visiting.

What family-friendly things to do are there on Yas Island?

Yas Island is laid out for family days out, with several large theme parks grouped close together. They include a motor-racing-themed park home to a rollercoaster recorded among the fastest in the world, reaching around 240 kilometres per hour, a waterpark with slides and a lazy river, and an indoor park themed around cartoon characters.

There is also a marine and wildlife park with an aquarium, and a racing circuit that hosts a Grand Prix each year. A large shopping mall, a golf course and a waterfront marina add to the options, giving enough to fill several days without leaving the island. Many venues are linked by free shuttle buses, which makes moving between them straightforward with children.

The island is connected to the mainland by road and sits close to the airport, around fifteen minutes away, so it works well at the start or end of a trip. Ride availability, shuttle services, opening times and ticketing can change, so check each venue's official information before visiting.

What is there to do along the Abu Dhabi Corniche?

The Corniche is Abu Dhabi's seafront promenade, running for around eight kilometres along the Gulf. It is where the city gathers to relax, with families picnicking on the grass, cyclists using the dedicated lane and joggers out in the cooler mornings and evenings.

A public beach lines part of the route, with lifeguards, calm water and a Blue Flag rating for water quality and safety, alongside shaded play areas and cafés spaced along the path. Across the water there are views of the skyline and the marina.

Bikes can be hired at points along the route, making it easy to cover the full stretch at your own pace, and pedestrian underpasses connect it to the city behind. The promenade is divided into sections with grassed areas and fountains, and the cooler months between October and April are the most comfortable for spending time outdoors here.

Which annual events take place in Abu Dhabi?

Abu Dhabi's events cluster in the cooler months, roughly October to April, when the weather suits outdoor gatherings. The motor-racing Grand Prix in late autumn is the largest fixture, drawing spectators from many countries and pairing race days with live concerts at the circuit.

Through the season there are cultural festivals, food and music events, and sporting tournaments across the city, including tennis and golf competitions. An annual international book fair runs in the spring, while heritage festivals showcase local crafts, falconry and traditional Bedouin life, often staged in the desert outside the city.

The dates shift slightly from year to year, so checking ahead is worthwhile, but a winter visit will usually coincide with something. Temperatures during these months generally sit between 20 and 30 degrees, far more comfortable for outdoor events than the summer, when daytime highs regularly pass 40 degrees and most activity moves indoors.
