Global destinations for an epic New Year's Eve

End the holiday season with a bang by planning a New Year's Eve getaway in an exciting global city

By Joanna Tweedy | November 8, 2023

In search of a New Year’s Eve to remember? Consider a trip to some of the most popular destinations around the globe, where your New Year’s celebrations are guaranteed to shine. So, here’s to 2024 and getting the best of both worlds: A top-notch vacation and an unforgettable New Year’s Eve.

Sydney

In late December, Australia’s iconic city is at the height of its summer season, meaning you can enjoy this outdoorsy metropolis at its sunny best — along with its epic end-of-year celebrations. Sydney Harbour Bridge provides a spectacular backdrop for the annual New Year’s Eve fireworks show. Check into West Hotel Sydney, Curio Collection by Hilton for a prime location next to Darling Harbour and close to major attractions including the Sydney Opera House, Taronga Zoo and Luna Park Sydney, a vintage fairground. Once you’ve had your fill of fireworks, you can spend New Year’s Day like a true Sydneysider with a trip to the beach — Bondi and Manly beaches are particularly popular choices.

Dubai

This shimmering desert city promises blue skies and comfortable winter warmth for those jetting in during December. New year excitement builds in Dubai long before the clock strikes 12, with concerts — often by international artists — held in the hours before. At midnight, the futuristic skyline lights up with an elaborate fireworks display shooting off from Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building. Stay at Hilton Dubai Palm Jumeirah and welcome the new year with lazy days spent relaxing on the private beach and soaking up views of the Arabian Gulf. Make time for a trip into the desert, too — the dunes at Al Awir are a short drive away — or explore Dubai’s famous malls and souks for souvenirs.

Paris

With its historic museums, high-end shopping and postcard-perfect sights, the French capital makes for a wonderful place to kickstart the new year. Paris’ flamboyant cabaret shows, including the Moulin Rouge, all have special New Year’s Eve dinner performances, but if you want to ring in the new year like a true Parisian, then hit the streets. Crowds gather in the elegant avenues around the Champs-Élysées long before midnight to secure a spot for the annual New Year’s Eve light show and fireworks at the Arc de Triomphe. Or take a souvenir selfie at the Eiffel Tower — still the city’s most popular photo-op. While there are no official fireworks here for New Year’s Eve, the famous landmark is still a sight to be seen.

New York

Head to the Big Apple at December’s end, and you’ll find New York ready to party. The Times Square New Year’s Eve ball drop grabs the headlines and brings the crowds, with about one million revellers gathering to see it live. Prefer to skip the crowds? A dinner or cocktail river cruise is a great way to see the city’s fireworks light up the famous skyline. A New Year’s Eve getaway to New York is also a perfect chance to tick off some major attractions during your stay. Book a room at Hilton New York Times Square to put yourself in the heart of the annual celebrations and close to Manhattan’s best sights and sounds. The Empire State Building, Grand Central Station and Bryant Park are all just a short walk away.

Vancouver, Canada

Pack your winterwear and make your way to British Colombia’s biggest city for a waterfront New Year’s Eve celebration you won’t forget. Festivities take place all over downtown Vancouver, including fireworks over False Creek inlet. For a true winter wonderland experience, head to Grouse Mountain, the snow-capped peak to Vancouver’s north, where slopes are open until 10 p.m. on New Year’s Eve for skiing and there’s a fireworks show. Get a start on your resolutions right away with a bike or hike around Stanley Park or let yourself indulge a while longer with foodie treats at Granville Island Public Market.

Whatever the season, a getaway in one of these global destinations promises plenty of arts and culture, plus vibrant dining and great shopping. Time your vacation with December 31st, though, and you’ll take things to the next level, with the opportunity to celebrate with visitors and locals alike ringing in the new year.
