Our Signature Activities
Inspired by Roku Kyoto’s roots in the historic Honami artisan enclave, guests embark on a small, intimate workshop with a local craftsperson (karakami papermaker, bamboo artist, lacquerware artisan, or ceramicist.)
The experience begins with a storytelling introduction at the Tea House, before guests walk to the artisan studio or nearby dedicated workshop space. They learn the philosophy behind Japanese craftsmanship, participate in a simple making process. Linking their stay to the region’s cultural DNA, a children’s edition can be created with simple craft activities, making this inclusive for families. For families traveling with children, a special activity kit is available to help young explorers discover the resort, complete fun missions, and learn about the area’s history and local attractions. Children receive a mini gift at the end of the experience.
Washi Paper Making
Dip back into the centuries-old tradition of Japanese paper making in this bespoke craft experience with the help of a Japanese paper artist.

Japanese Tea Ceremony
Nestled in the beautiful north garden of the expansive Shozan Resort is a quaint Japanese teahouse full of character and charm. Relocated from the revered Daitokuji Temple, this secluded historical building, surrounded by Kitayama cedars and colorful maple leaves, provides the perfect traditional tea ceremony experience in an oasis of total tranquility.

Dialog Journey to the Heart of GION with Satsuki
Satsuki, a legendary Geiko, will guide guests through the historic streets of Gion to experience the living culture that has been carefully preserved over the centuries. After the tour, guests will spend time at Kyoto Machiya and learn about the hidden world of the Kagai and the essence of Kyoto.

Roku Kyoto Treasure Hunt

Step behind the scenes to experience a new side of the hotel most guests never visit with this exclusive one-on-one backstage tour of ROKU KYOTO. Reservation required for this half-hour complimentary activity. Only one tour group per day.

Traditional Weaving Experience
Learn the craft of textile making from Mr. Amane Tatsumura, the fourth generation owner of KOHO Nishikiori Traditional Textile Studio. Mr. Tatsumura will take guests on a special tour of the studio gallery, where beautiful brocade weaving and rare restorations of ancient textiles are on display. Guests will then weave their own textile using beautifully dyed silk threads with colors that are inspired by our resort.

Kyo-Karakami Paper-printing Experience
Experiencing a traditional paper-printing called Kyo-Karakami, making the postcard with the ROKU KYOTO original pattern.
Kyo-Karakami paper is produced with skills passed down from ancient times by generations of craftsman, with a history stretching back about 1,300 years in Kyoto.

A Tranquil Morning Zen Experience to Restore Inner Peace
Experience a tranquil morning of Zen meditation beneath the eaves of Hōgyokutei, nestled within the serene Japanese garden of Shōzan Resort. A distinguished monk from Kōshōji Temple will lead the session with gentle and attentive guidance. Immersed in the natural sounds of birdsong and rustling leaves, you are invited to step away from the distractions of daily life and refine your awareness in this rare and elegant moment of stillness.
