Kintsugi
Discover this traditional Japanese technique of restoring chipped or broken ceramic vessels using lacquer and gold powder. Sprinkling gold powder over the lacquer joints transforms unsightly cracks into beautiful, unique designs.
This practice has been part of Japanese life since ancient times with a similar technique used as early as the Jomon period (c. 14,000 to 300 BC), as earthenware was excavated from archaeological sites. Although there are various theories in kintsugi’s history, it is said that the technique was born more than 400 years ago, between the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the Edo period, known as the “Chanoyu” (tea ceremony) period.
