Iconic diners and roadside eats on Illinois Route 66
Follow the Mother Road from Chicago to Bloomington for a taste of its legendary diners and nostalgic Americana.

Illinois is one of the most satisfying stretches of Route 66 because the food history starts almost immediately. Roadside eats and classic diner counters line the drive, creating a backdrop made for a long weekend. This four-stop foodie itinerary follows the iconic route from Chicago to Bloomington with easy pacing, a strong sense of place, and timely appeal as American’s 250th birthday brings fresh attention to the Mother Road.
Stop 1: Lou Mitchell’s
Every good Route 66 weekend needs a starting-line ritual, and Chicago gives you one with real history. Begin at the official Route 66 sign near Michigan Avenue and East Adams Street, then head toward Jackson Boulevard, the route’s original downtown path and the home of the iconic Lou Mitchell’s diner. Open since 1923, the restaurant was already serving breakfast when Route 66 was commissioned in 1926, and guests are still greeted with fresh donut holes and Milk Duds while they wait. For an overnight or longer stay, Hampton Inn Majestic Chicago Theatre District puts you just a few blocks from the route’s starting point and within easy reach of other must-visit Chicago landmarks, including Millennium Park, The Art Institute of Chicago, and Willis Tower.
Stop 2: Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket
By the time you reach the Heritage Corridor, the city edges have softened and classic roadside Illinois takes over. Stop at the legendary, neon-lit Dell Rhea’s Chicken Basket for some of the best fried chicken on the Mother Road. It began in the 1930s as a gas-station lunch counter, then grew into the 1946 roadhouse that later earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places. If you want one extra piece of Americana nearby, make a detour at the White Fence Farm in Romeoville to explore the vintage museum, listen to live music in the barn, and grab a treat for the road. Hampton Inn & Suites Bolingbrook makes the overnight easy with free hot breakfast, free parking, free Wi-Fi, and a heated indoor pool.

Stop 3: The Old Log Cabin
The charming town of Pontiac feels like the cultural heart of this stretch. Route 66 is everywhere you look, from downtown murals to museum collections and roadside stories. The Old Log Cabin anchors your stop with old-school comfort food and made-from-scratch pies. Opened in 1926 as a lunchroom and gas station, it was famously lifted and turned 180 degrees when the road shifted, so it could keep facing Route 66. Afterward, linger at the Route 66 Association Hall of Fame and Museum, then look for Bob Waldmire’s Volkswagen bus for another layer of Mother Road lore. Hampton Inn Pontiac keeps you close to the theme just outside of downtown, where you can reset at the fitness center or indoor pool, then fuel up for the next stretch with free hot breakfast.
Stop 4: The Lucca Grill
The twin-city area of Bloomington-Normal gives the trip a satisfying finish because the road still holds onto its old junction energy here. The Lucca Grill has welcomed diners since 1936, and the details do the storytelling for you — thin-crust pizza arriving hot to the table, an ornate tin ceiling overhead, and an antique mahogany bar that feels untouched by time. This last stop proves that Illinois Route 66 is less about rushing through landmarks and more about sitting down where history lives on the walls. Hampton Inn Bloomington West keeps the final night simple on the west side of Bloomington-Normal, with spacious rooms, free parking, and free hot breakfast. Its location near I-55 and I-74 makes it easy to jump back on the road and finish your trip with ease.
